Ratios

A provider’s license indicates the maximum number of children that can be cared for at any one time. It is important to understand the specific number of children that can be cared for within each age group as defined in licensing requirements. The total number of children allowed varies depending upon the ages of children in care each day.

SMALL Family Child Care Home

In a small family child care home, there can be present at the same time:

  • 1 Adult to 4 Infants (Children under the age of 2)

  • 1 Adult to 6 Children (Max of 3 children under the age of 2)

  • 1 Adult to 8 Children (Max of 2 children under the age of 2 AND must include 2 children over the age of 6)

NOTE: Provider’s own children under the age of 10 must be included in adult to child ratios

LARGE Family Child Care Home

In a large family child care home, there can be present at the same time:

  • 2 Adults to 12 Children (Max of 4 children under the age of 2)

  • 2 Adults to 14 Children (Max of 3 children under the age of 2 AND must include 2 children over the age of 6)

NOTE: Provider’s own children under the age of 10 must be included in adult to child ratios

Staff-Child Ratio Schedule

To ensure the applicable adult-child ratios are met a provider should have a ratio schedule completed at all times, and update as their enrollment changes.

The department provides the Staff-Child Ratio Schedule: Form CCD 36 to plan for ratios based on the composition of a classroom.

Contractors may develop their own Child Ratio Schedule form such as this on in the photo.

No matter what format is used, the ratio schedule can serve as your documentation to show that applicable adult-child ratios are met for each age group.

Reminder: The ratio schedule must be maintained & updated when there are changes in enrollment.
