Posting/Information

Evidence of compliance includes postings and/or information for parents, providers, or public that includes the contractor’s statement that the program does not provide religious instruction or worship.

What this might look like in a program:

  1. Statement in Parent Handbook

  2. Posted statement on all site bulletin boards

  3. All adults refrain from religious instruction & worship when around children & families in a subsidized program

Separation of Church/State vs Freedom of Religion

Adults must refrain from religious instruction & worship while working with children & families in a subsidized programs.

Adults may NOT engage in religious conduct or activity while working with children & families in a subsidized programs.

This should not be confused with a freedom of religion

NOTE: This includes religious holidays. Be cautious when labeling non-operational days, center celebrations or events.

What this might look like in a program:

  • As part of the orientation process, individuals are made aware that while working with children & families they must refrain from religious instruction & worship

  • A student may pray to whatever or whomever they want at any time of day, as long as they’re doing so does not disrupt school & they do not try to force others to do the same

  • Consider aligning non-operational days, center celebrations or event names to seasons rather than holidays such as spring break, fall harvest or winter celebration
